Our Story

More Than Furniture. Building Futures, One Opportunity at a Time.

We believe every South African deserves beautifully handcrafted furniture that doesn't cost a fortune—and every hardworking person deserves the opportunity to build a better future.

That simple belief inspired three young entrepreneurs from different backgrounds, cultures and walks of life to come together in 2014 and found Custom Couches.

Each founder brought a unique strength to the business. One had extensive experience in sales, another specialised in marketing, and the third was a master furniture manufacturer with the knowledge and skill to handcraft quality furniture from the timber frame to the very last stitch. Together, they shared a vision to build a furniture company that would never compromise on quality, craftsmanship or people.

Custom Couches was launched at a pivotal time in South Africa's furniture industry. A major national furniture retailer had recently closed its doors, leaving a significant gap in the market. While many saw uncertainty, we saw an opportunity to do things differently.

At the time, quality furniture was often beyond the reach of many South African families, while more affordable options frequently sacrificed durability and craftsmanship. We believed customers shouldn't have to choose between quality and affordability. Everyone deserves beautiful, comfortable furniture that is built to last and designed around their own lifestyle.

That belief became the foundation of Custom Couches.

We chose the name Custom Couches because we wanted every customer to have a choice. While we offer a range of carefully designed furniture, we believe your furniture should reflect your home, your family and your lifestyle. Customers can customise sizes, fabrics, colours and finishes to create furniture that is uniquely theirs.

Our journey began with humble beginnings in a single garage at our home in Durban.

We didn't have a large factory or expensive machinery. What we had was determination, a commitment to exceptional quality and an unwavering belief that great businesses are built by investing in people.

From the very beginning, we decided to do something different.

Instead of only employing experienced craftsmen, we opened our doors to people who simply wanted an opportunity. Most of our team walked into our factory with no upholstery or furniture manufacturing experience whatsoever. They came looking for work, hoping someone would give them a chance.

We did.

New employees learned by watching those who had gone before them. Day by day they developed new skills, mastering woodworking, frame building, upholstery, cutting, sewing and furniture assembly. Each generation of craftsmen trained the next, creating a culture where knowledge, patience and pride in workmanship were shared every day.

One of our proudest stories is about a young gardener who had never imagined a future in furniture manufacturing. When he first saw what we were doing, he believed he could never do it. But through encouragement, training and determination, he discovered talents he never knew he had. Today he is one of our most skilled craftsmen, producing work of the highest standard and demonstrating exactly what can happen when someone is simply given an opportunity.

Stories like his remind us why Custom Couches exists.

Over the years, many of the people we trained have gone on to establish successful furniture businesses of their own. Watching the skills developed within our workshop multiply into new businesses and create opportunities for even more South Africans is one of our greatest achievements. We don't see that as losing employees—we see it as fulfilling our purpose.

Like thousands of South African businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic brought enormous challenges.

Rather than giving up, we adapted.

To protect our business, our team and the livelihoods of the people who depended on us, we made the difficult decision to move our factory into our home in the north of Johannesburg. Instead of paying for separate business premises, we transformed our home into a fully functioning furniture workshop, allowing us to continue serving our customers and protecting the jobs we had worked so hard to create.

Today, many of our craftsmen live here with us on the property. Over the years we have become far more than employers and employees.

We have become family.

We celebrate together, support one another through life's challenges, encourage each other to grow and share in each other's successes. That sense of family influences everything we do—from the way we treat our team to the care we put into every piece of furniture that leaves our workshop.

Every couch, dining chair, headboard, ottoman and cushion we manufacture represents more than quality craftsmanship.

It represents hope.

It represents opportunity.

It represents the belief that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things when someone believes in them.
